Testing for Dyslexia & Learning Disabilities
Evaluations to help students achieve academic goals.
Clinical Answers for Struggling Students
Learning disability testing, also known as psychoeducational assessment, dyslexia evaluation, and similar names, is one way to get answers about learning abilities and academic struggles. Below, you can learn more about learning disability testing and what to expect from this process. I offer testing for specific learning disorders like dyslexia as well as general learning abilities.
Learning Disability Testing
The purpose of learning disability and dyslexia testing is to ensure that parents, teachers, and other academic resource providers can support a student in achieving academic goals. Learning disability evaluation may be recommended as part of a school district’s special education program. These assessments can also be administered to increase self-awareness and provide information about areas of learning strengths and weaknesses.

Why Schedule Learning Disability Testing
Learning disability assessment is available for children, adolescents and adults. However, it is much more common for young people. Psychoeducational testing provides a glimpse into how a person thinks, their abilities and any challenges that may deter them from achieving academic success. In general, clients want to get answers to questions like:
- What are my cognitive and academic strengths and weaknesses?
- What subjects do I excel at learning?
- What subjects do I struggle to pick up?
- Are there cognitive or emotional factors that contribute to learning challenges?
- Does executive function, hyperactivity, or inattentiveness contribute to learning differences?
What to Expect During Learning Disability Assessment
During learning disability testing, information is gathered to help understand how the person I am assessing learns and what challenges they may need to overcome through educational support resources. A personalized assessment battery may include:
- Clinical interviews – talk about your past and present health, cognitive, emotional and behavioral abilities.
- Rating scales – review of the severity and pervasiveness of specific symptoms provided by the client, teachers, parents and other loved ones or caregivers.
- Consultation – with other professionals such as therapists, tutors, teachers or physicians
- Testing battery – a combination of intelligence and ability tests may be administered as well as neuropsychological measures.
Once I have collected and compiled the results of assessments, I will provide a full written report and review the contents with clients and/or parents as appropriate. In some cases, I may also provide reports to schools, special education programs, or academic resource centers as requested.
