Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) Testing

Struggle with inattentiveness, hyperactivity, or poor impulse control? You may suffer from ADHD.

What Is ADHD?

ADHD is an executive function disorder that impacts a person’s ability to pay attention (inattentive type), control impulses and behaviors (hyperactive type), or both (combined type). What indicates ADHD in an adult may not point to the same diagnosis in children. Young people naturally have shorter attention spans and more energy. Thus, I perform comprehensive testing that is designed with the individual in mind.

What Are the Common ADHD Symptoms?

The symptoms of ADHD will be different in children and adults. Below, I have outlined common symptoms in young clients and adults.

What Should One Expect During ADHD Testing?

I utilize a testing battery for ADHD that is effective in diagnosing ADHD, but I will also administer any additional psychoeducational or psychological tests to ensure I have a complete picture of my client’s individual skills and abilities as well as answering diagnostic questions. ADHD diagnosis is often more complicated than reviewing a symptom rating scale and conducing a short interview. While these tools are excellent screening resources, they are often not adequate to make a final diagnosis.

While the specific testing battery may vary, the general ADHD testing process includes:

  • Consultation – a short, initial conversation to ensure ADHD testing is the right option.
  • Intake – this first session where I gather background information, including medical health, mental health, academic performance and career performance.
  • Clinical interviewing – I dig deeper into specific areas of potential concern.
  • Rating scales – these clinically tested scales give me an idea of the severity of ADHD symptoms.
  • Assessment battery – intelligence, neuropsychological and other tests deemed necessary.
  • Report and follow up – the gathered information is reviewed, and a comprehensive report is written. During a follow up visit, I review the report with the client or parent.
